Work in progress at the Eendrachtskapel

27 / 08 / 2017

In April and May of this year, we reported that not only urgent repairs were needed in the parsonage, where the ceilings in the two meeting rooms need to be renewed, but also work is needed to tackle leaks in the roof of the church. The restoration work focuses on making the Eendrachtskapel windproof and waterproof.

This is necessary to preserve the building for the future. It is not a complete restoration because for a complete restauration more funds would be needed than currently available.

In early August the scaffolds were placed. Mgr. Van den Hende was personally informed on Wednesday 23 August about the work in progress on the gutters, the roof and side walls of the church. The bishop climbed the scaffolding together with economist John Bakker and other members of the board of the roman catholic institution HH. Laurentius and Ignatius.

Mgr. Van den Hende: "The Eendrachtskapel has a special place in the Catholic community of Rotterdam, because this chapel is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the city of Rotterdam, which is used as such. But also because people can come together for prayer and adoration before the Blessed Sacrament at different times of the week. And because a growing number of people find their way to the chapel for the celebration of the holy mass in the English language on Sunday evening.” At the top of the scaffold, a picture was taken. "From that point we could have a good look at the roof gutters, which are being coated inside."

Making the Eendrachtskapel windproof and waterproof involves the necessary costs. Gutters are being repaired: lined and painted on the outside. The roof of the church and the roofedges of the parsonage are renewed and the roof is cleaned. The wooden boards on the side walls of the church are fixed and renewed where necessary. The nails in the wooden lining of the sidewall are scanned for this purpose and stainless steel screws will be used to secure loose lining.

Mgr. Van den Hende: "The Eendrachtskapel is in the city of Rotterdam the place for worship and meeting for many Catholic believers. I hope and pray that we can save this special place and keep it vital through the financial support of many. "
